Development Department Director

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing It Is Written’s annual fundraising and capital campaign. The Director of Development works closely with the administration and departmental directors in development and fundraising endeavors.

 

AUTHORITY & ACCOUNTABILITY: President/Manager

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  • Possess working knowledge of Development best practices, trends in non-profit, religious development, fundraising tools and technology, including donor databases, e-mail, and online campaigns, and donor research
  • Possess working knowledge of marketing best practices, trends in branding, and an understanding of a religious-specific market and its associated communication needs
  • Develop and implement a short and long-term advancement plan to meet established development goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with Planned Giving and Trust Services department
  • Provide daily management of development staff including establishing annual goals, providing regular performance reviews and appropriate recognition, and supporting ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Responsible for capital campaigns
  • Coordinate special events for fundraising and marketing opportunities
  • Manage ministry representation at conventions and camp-meetings including booth design, content, and operational logistics
  • Direct marketing message for social media, emails, and print
  • Manage the acquisition of ministry promotional items
  • Oversee printed marketing content including a quarterly magazine
  • Oversee marketing representation by contracted entities
  • Develop and maintain donor recognition programs
    • Design and coordinate seven annual fundraising weekends across the country
    • Ensure that development-associated content is correct, functional, and up-to-date in online media
  • Oversee the writing and design of a monthly direct mail appeal letter and design targeted appeals as needed to specific segments
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with donors including ongoing communication
  • Manage prospect research and cultivation initiatives with a special emphasis on pursuing strategies to secure or increase giving from donors in multiple demographics
  • Develop strategies for existing donors to effectively move them through a meaningful cycle of giving
  • Manage gift processing, donor database maintenance, and financial reporting
  • Oversee creation of publications to support fundraising activities

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

 

1. QUALIFICATIONS, SCOPE, & COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES:

Education: Have a bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communication or related field

Experience: Have two years minimum experience in professional fundraising

Membership and Mission: Embrace the mission of It Is Written and be a member in good standing of the Seventh-day Adventist Church

Skills Scope and complexity of duties:

  • Possess an understanding of and be supportive of public evangelism
  • Possess creative and technical writing skills
  • Have knowledge of and experience in fundraising and fundraising techniques
  • Possess a working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge software
  • Possess the skills to work with and motivate staff and donors
  • Be able to recognize, develop, and implement new fundraising models for small, medium, and major gifts
  • Connect with donors in person, over the phone, and in writing
  • Develop relationships with special donors as needed
  • Be organized and exhibit follow through on tasks and goals
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening ability
  • Possess the ability to balance multiple priorities in a complex environment.
  • Demonstrate servant leadership and exemplify a collaborative, decisive, motivating, and engaging communication style

3. WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • General working conditions of an office and production studio
  • Travel flexibility and travel hazards
  • Physical requirements: requires standing, walking, time at a desk, reaching, climbing, and lifting (maximum of 50 lbs.)
  • Statistics:
  • 38 regular hours per week,
  • Will require variable hours and weekend work

No special clothing or safety gear required
